Video and audio delivery burns transfer faster than anything else. A large allocation on a fast port keeps playback smooth at peak without a bill that moves every month.

Backup & archive targets

Offsite backup is all write, all night, and restores need to be fast when they matter. Port speed decides how long a full restore takes, which is the number that counts.

CDN & game servers

An origin serves every cache miss and a game server carries constant small packets. Both want headroom and low latency rather than raw core count.

A full set of Linux and Windows operating systems, installed and ready when your server is handed over. Versions listed are those still in support; if you need an older release for a legacy application, ask and we will tell you what is possible.

AlmaLinux 9, 10

The community-driven successor to CentOS Linux, binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This is what we recommend for cPanel, which officially supports it.

Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS, 24.04 LTS

Widely used and familiar to most developers, with long-term support releases maintained for five years. A safe default for application servers and container hosts.

Debian 12, 13

Stable, conservative and packaged for almost everything. Popular where predictability matters more than having the newest version of each component.

Rocky Linux 9, 10

Another Red Hat compatible rebuild, and a straightforward choice if your team already standardises on it. Note that cPanel has deprecated Rocky, so pair it with a different panel or none.

CentOS Stream 9, 10

The rolling upstream of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Suitable for self-managed and Plesk setups; for cPanel choose AlmaLinux instead, as cPanel does not support Stream.

FreeBSD 13, 14

A long-established Unix system with ZFS and jails built in, favoured for storage, networking and firewall roles.

Windows Server Standard 2019, 2022, 2025

For .NET, MSSQL, Active Directory or anything else that needs the Microsoft stack. Licensing is charged on top, from £5.00/month.

These servers are sold with a stated monthly transfer allocation rather than as an unmetered port, so you know exactly what you have bought. That is deliberate: an unmetered port with an unpublished fair-use policy tells you very little, whereas an allocation is a number you can plan against. Tell us the volume you expect and we will size it, and we will be upfront about what happens if you exceed it.

Overage is charged at 8p per GB excluding VAT (10p including VAT) rather than the connection being cut off or silently throttled. If you find yourself paying overage regularly, that is a sign the allocation is wrong, so talk to us and we will requote instead of letting it run.

A port speed is a ceiling, not a promise, and in practice the limit is usually somewhere else: the disks, the CPU handling encryption, single-stream TCP behaviour over long distances, or the far end. We would rather talk through your actual traffic pattern and specify hardware that can fill the port you are paying for than sell you a number that looks good on an invoice.

The common thread is that the network, not the processor, is the thing that runs out first. If your bottleneck is compute rather than transfer, a standard dedicated server is the better buy.
